Mandalorian and Grogu- Who needs it?
So i watched the new trailer for the first uncoming Star Wars film in what seems like forever. Since the release of the near universally disliked Episode 9, fans have been wanting a fresh start, a move away from the 'Skywalker Saga'. This new slated film is Disney's attempt to cash in on the once popular streaming series, and deliverer this fresh start. But will it be what this company and audiences have been wanting?
The trailer begins with a shot of a spaceship flying, and i was immediately struck by how fake looking this CGI effect was. It appears as an unfinished render, moving through the sky like a PNG being dragged. Not a good start to what seems to position itself as some kind of grand cinematic event. This film is supposed to be an epic conclusion to the storylines from the Disney Plus Tv Show, but even that was becoming a mixed bag by its third season. It begs the question, do audiences even want more adventures from Mando and 'Baby Yoda', and why couldn't have been a new season of the show?
The trailer gives us a look at a new Jabba the hut character, a return of the Babu Frick species, and Sigourney Weaver as a new character. These first two elements serve at little more than jangling keys, asking viewers to become excited by references and famous icons from movie history. This writer sees little reason to get hyped about the return of the slug from a film now over 40 years old, and the Alien horror icon who has starred in a string of other middling sci-fi movies. The nostalgia pit has run dry. No real indication of the film's stakes, or story are given. I find it hard to become invested in a faceless, Pascal body double, and a goofy plushie (puppet). I'll wait for the full trailer to judge if this is a story worth telling.
Another drawn-out, equally unfinished effects shot plays out, an AT-AT walker falling off a cliff. A metaphor perhaps for the fandom's hype itself recently. An endless slog of mediocre streaming shows has worn down the public perception of the Star Wars series, into sloppy, badly written trash. Can this new 'Mando' movie reignite the excitement that i remember from near a decade ago, when Force Awakens seemed a long time coming? I hope so, but from this trailer it seems, the film will need to bring a lot more in order to fill the cinema seats instead of keeping audiences waiting for a home release they've become well used to.
